Yes, the European team chess championship has begun in the Olympic Hall in
Porto Carras, Greece today. A total 38 teams in the Open and 28 teams in the
Women Section are participating. Players cannot leave the playing area and
facilities, and that they can discuss draw offers with their captains only
in the presence of the match arbiter. There will be additional arbiters
overseeing the playing hall, analysis room and bar to prevent any suspicion

The women's world chess championship 2011 between Hou Yifan of China and
Koneru Humpy of India is round the corner. FIDE Deputy President Georgios
Makropoulos was in Albania inspecting the site for the FIDE Women's World
Championship Match 2011 to be held in Tirana from 13th November to 30th
November. There he met with Mr. Rezart Taçi, the new President of the
Albanian Chess Federation and the personal sponsor of the FIDE Women's World
Championship.

FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos was in Albania inspecting the
site for the FIDE Women's World Championship Match 2011 between Hou Yifan
and Humpy Koneru to be held in Tirana from 13th November to 30th November.
There he met with Mr. Rezart Taçi, the new President of the Albanian Chess
Federation and the personal sponsor of the FIDE Women's World Championship.
This is being done through his company, Taçi Oil International Trading and

Working visit of the FIDE President to Paraguay

On the November 2nd the FIDE President arrived in Asuncion, where he met
with the Minister of Sports of Paraguay Paulo Reichard. The meeting was also
attended by FIDE Zone 2.5 President Enrique Celi, President of the Paraguay
Chess Federation Victor Manuel Salinas, and its General Secretary Julio
Cesar Ingolotti as well as the Federation's Treasurer Ronald Zarza.

World champion Viswanathan Anand overpowered second- seeded defending
champion Shakhriyar Mamedyarov 2-0 to win the Corsica Masters knockout rapid
chess title at Ajaccio, France, on Monday. Anand, who overcame compatriot
Krishnan Sasikiran 3-1 in the semifinal by winning the two blitz games,
outwitted Mamedyarov with white pieces in the first game after 43 moves of
Grunfeld defence.

Change of Playing Schedule for World Youth

The World Youth Championships will take place at Caldas Novas, Brazil from
November 17th to 27th 2011.
The Executive Board Meeting in Krakow considered whether the schedule for
this year’s World Youth Championships should be amended. The change of venue
from Rio de Janeiro to Caldas Novas has meant that there are only nine
possible playing days. The inspection team recommended that the playing
schedule be reduced to nine rounds with a double round day for the 3rd and
4th rounds followed by a rest day. This was accepted by the Executive Board.

FIDE President in Uruguay

The FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov arrived in Montevideo to attend the
opening ceremony of the 2nd edition of the Latin American Cup. This year
this event with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov as its main sponsor, has gathered nearly
240 players from 12 Latin American countries.
During his visit to Uruguay, the FIDE President has also met with the
representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ministry of
Tourism and Sport of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. He also called on the

Here is an excellent film on Nezhmetdinov sent by Ray Kappel. The Soviet
Chess master Rashid Nezhmetdinov was one of the most feared attacking
players in chess history. Although not well known in the west, he won many
brilliancy prizes and defeated most of the best players of his era,
including Mikhail Tal, Boris Spassky, David Bronstein, Efim Geller, Lev
Polugaevsky, Isaak Boleslavsly, Salo Flohr, Andor Lilienthal, Gideon

Russia takes gold at the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad

Hi everyone,
The Turkish Chess Federation (TCF) organised the World Youth Under-16 Chess
Olympiad in Kocaeli, Turkey from 23rd October to 1st November. Armenia held
the lead throughout the tournament, but the Russian team played a very
convincing finish. Russia went into the lead in the penultimate round and
eventually clinched the gold medal. Russia won 9 matches and lost one.
Armenia, with 6 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses, takes silver medal, point and a
half behind Russia.

Congratulations to Thomas Luther for winning the first world chess games for the disabled

Hi everyone,
Thomas Luther has won the 1st World Chess Games for Disabled. The players
were awarded in the categories: overall, the Physically Disabled (IPCA),
blind (IBCA), deaf (ICSC) and the best teams. Each of the three best players
in these categories were given medals and cash prizes.
Thomas Luther, who played for the chess festival ZMDI eV was able to achieve
7 points in 7 rounds for the tournament and win the gold medal. Apart from
