 satu emas, dua perak, dua perunggu. Akhirnya pecatur Indonesia dapat meraih emas di SEA Games 2011. Grand Master (GM) Susanto Megaranto mempersembahkan emas semata wayang dari cabang catur bagi Indonesia setelah memiliki nilai 4 poin dalam perlombaan standard chess yang digelar di Hotel Swarna Dwipa, Palembang, Senin 21 November 2011.
Susanto bermain remis saat melawan Fide Master (FM) asal Myanmar, Kyaw Lin Naing di putaran ke 5. Susanto melangkah dengan Hindia Menteri dan menawarkan remis kepada Lin Naing di langkah kedelapan. Hasil remis menghadapi Lin Naing cukup bagi Susanto untuk meraih emas. Medali perak menjadi milik GM asal Filipina, Wesley So setelah bermain imbang menghadapi GM asal Vietnam, Co Sang. Wesley mengumpulkan 3,5 poin. Medali perunggu direbut Lin Naing dengan 3 poin.
Sementara itu para pecatur putri Indonesia merebut satu medali perak dari nomor catur kilat putri, dua medali perunggu dari nomor catur kilat putri dan catur standar putri perorangan. WFM Medina Warda Aulia meraih medali perak dari nomor catur kilat putri dengan mengemas nilai 6,5. Kemudian medali perunggu dari nomor catur kilat putri diraih WIM Chelsie Monica Sihite yang juga mengumpulkan nilai 6,5. Sementara dangkan medali perunggu dari nomor catur standar putri perorangan diraih oleh WGM Irine Kharisma Sukandar dengan mengumpulkan nilai 2,5.
Dengan demikian Indonesia dalam cabang catur hanya memperoleh 1 emas, 2 perak dan 2 perunggu, berada diurutan ketiga. Untuk juara umum cabang olah raga SEA Games 2011 adalah Vietnam dengan 6 emas, 2 perak dan 3 perunggu sedangkan urutan kedua, Filipina dengan 1 emas, 4 perak 3 perunggu.

Para pecatur Indonesia gagal menyumbangkan medali SEA Games ke-26 untuk kontingen Merah Putih dari tiga nomor yang telah selesai dipertandingkan.
    
Hingga babak kelima atau putaran terakhir nomor pasangan campuran yang berlangsung di Hotel Swarna Dwipa Palembang, Rabu, pecatur GM Susanto Megaranto (2537) dan WGM Irene Kharisma Sukandar (2350) hanya menempati posisi keempat di bawah pasangan asal Vietnam, Filipina dan Malaysia.
    
Pada babak kelima, Susanto-Irene hanya berbagi angka 1-1 melawan pasangan campuran asal Vietnam GM Dao Thien Hai (2505) dan WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An (2300).
    
Dengan hasil tersebut, medali emas jatuh ke tangan pasangan pecatur Vietnam yang secara keseluruhan mengumpulkan 8,5 angka kemenangan. Medali perak direbut pasangan Filipina GM Oliver Barbosa (2571) dan WIM Chaterine Perena (2083), sementara perunggu digondol pasangan Malaysia, IM Lim Yee-Weng (2253) dan WFM Nur Najiha Hisham (1867).
    
Sementara di nomor catur ASEAN, pecatur Taufik Halay juga hanya menempati posisi keempat dan tidak kebagian medali. Sempat memberi harapan ketika harus menjalani babak play off untuk memperebutkan medali perunggu melawan pecatur Vietnam Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy karena sama-sama memiliki 1,5 angka kemenangan, Taufik akhirnya juga harus kalah.
    
Medali emas nomor catur ASEAN diraih pecatur Thailand Kongsee Uaychai dengan total 4 angka kemenangan, medali perak menjadi milik pecatur Myanmar Wynn Zaw Htun yang mengoleksi 2 angka kemenangan, sementara medali perunggu direbut Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy.
Sementara pada nomor catur buta, dua pecatur Indonesia masing-masing Dede Liu (2375) dan Tirta Chandra Purnama (2384) juga kalah bersaing dengan para pecatur dari negara lain.
    
Tirta Chandra juga hanya berada di posisi keempat dengan 5 angka kemenangan, sementara posisi Dede Liu lebih buruk lagi karena hanya mampu mengumpulkan 3,5 angka kemenangan.
Medali emas diraih pecatur Vietnam GM Le Quang Liem (2714) yang memenangkan partai play off melawan pecatur Filipina GM John Paul Gomez (2506) yang harus puas dengan medali perak karena sama-sama mengumpulkan 7 angka kemenangan, sementara medali perunggu menjadi milik pecatur Filipina lainnya GM Laylo Darwin (2502).
Menyikapi hasil tersebut, Ketua Bidang Pembinaan dan Prestasi PB Percasi Kristianus Liem mengatakan, kekalahan pecatur Indonesia lebih karena mereka terbebani oleh target.
"Anak-anak terbebani target. Susanto dan Irene, misalnya, dibebani target meraih medali emas sekaligus menjadi pecatur unggulan di nomor pasangan campuran. Target itu justru menjadi bumerang bagi mereka," ujar dia.
    
Ketika ditanya soal target dua medali emas yang dibebankan kepada tim catur Indonesia di ajang SEA Games, menurut dia masih dapat dipenuhi melalui enam nomor lain yang baru dipertandingkan mulai Kamis (17/11).
Cabang catur memperebutkan sembilan set medali, masing-masing dari nomor pasangan campuran, catur buta, dan catur ASEAN, serta dari nomor catur standar perseorangan putra dan putri, catur cepat putra dan putri, serta nomor catur kilat putra dan putri.
