Anna Ushenina defeated Ju Wenjun on tie-break and advanced to the final
In the first tie-break game Anna, playing White, got an overwhelming
position after the opening. Ju Wenjun had to sacrifice a piece in order to
save her king from White’s attack. Black had some counterplay, but White
calmly parried all threats, and soon the Chinese resigned.

In the second game Ju Wenjun got a better position, and Black sacrificed a
pawn to avoid bigger trouble. White responded by sacrificing an exchange

GM Heberla Bartlomiej has won the 2nd Malta Chess Open on tiebreak versus
GM Petrov Marian. Both scored a total of 7,5 points each, but Heberla took
the trophy on higher tie-break. A total of 159 players from 28 countries
took part in the chess event that has found support from Malta Touristic
Agency and Cheverny International. A total of 12 GMs and seven IMs came to
the island to play the chess tournament south of Sicily.

On November 18th the famous American, former Soviet, WGM Elena
Akhmylovskaya passed away after a long illness. WGM Elena Akhmylovskaya was
Champion of the Soviet Union (1980), three-fold Champion of USA (1990,
1993, 1994). In 1986 Akhmylovskaya played a Championship match but lost to
the reigning Champion Maya Chiburdanidze. After Olympiad in 1988 she got
married to US team captain John Donaldson and moved to United States. In

A special illusion show and Siberia Brass music show will be part of the
opening ceremony of the Women's World Chess Championship 2012 on Saturday,
November 10. The main theme of the opening ceremony would be to recreate a
"mysterious world of the chess space". The ceremony will take place in the Concert
