Hi everyone,
What's a falcon got to do with a chess tournament? You will find out by the
end of this news item! The first international chess tournament in El
Haouaria, Tunisia, would take place from March 17 to April 4. GM Nigel
Short will be a guest for the first part of the festival and will give a
simultaneous exhibition on 30 boards, on 16 March.
More than 120 players have already registred including a number of invited

Hello everyone,
Here is some exciting chess news for all fans of women's chess. Women's
world chess champion Hou Yifan, from China, would play at the Reykjavik
Open. The event begins on March 6 at Harpa Concert Hall - the spectacular
waterfront concert hall in downtown Reykjavik.
She is the second reigning Women’s World Champion to take part in the
history of the tournament. Nona Gaprindashvili played in the inaugural 1964
edition (won by Mikhail Tal).

Working visit of FIDE President to Algeria

On February 21, the FIDE President arrived on a visit to the People's
Democratic Republic of Algeria where he had working meetings with the
leadership of Algeria, the FIDE Continental President for the Africa Mr
Lakhdar Mazouz and the chess society. At the meeting with the Minister of
Youth and Sports Hashemi Djiar and the Minister of Education Boubekeur
Benbouzid, the issues related to the chess development and the
implementation of the Chess in Schools programme have been discussed, as
well as the the conducting of the major chess tournaments in Algeria.
